Nothing, a poem

by D. Allison Smith

What are you doing?
Nothing.
Are you gonna do that all day?
Hopefully and maybe so, so won't you go away.
For what reason, may I ask, won't you tell me so?
No.
No to what. What answer is that?
That's no for the question one just asked.
Oh…
So, that nothing you're doing all day…
Is it any fun? Can you show me the way?
The way to what?
Nothing.
No.
Again with this no. What is this no? Tell me so.
It's this you want to know?
Not no, but know
Know what?
Nothing.
That's right. Nothing.
That's what I'm doing all along this day.
And thank goodness you've gone away.
So now I can sit back and do
Something?
No. I know.
It's nothing.
